{this moment} inspired by Soule Mama to capture a tiny piece of our week. Spotted: my lap is quickly running out of room for my little dancing birdie here. 36 weeks today. Have a good weekend, lovelies! Any fun October (!) plans?

grateful
It’s been a very LONG week full of very LONG days, with the little birdie overflowing with tantrums and with me, not having much energy or patience to deal with them. I am trying to be grateful. For where we are. Here. Right now. But it is hard…
Breaking news! Since I wrote the beginning of this post, I have taken the little birdie to the pediatrician after she very clearly complained of her ear hurting (“Mama, my ear hurts.”) Diagnosis? Ear infection! Ah-haaaaaa. I’ve never been so glad to hear that my child is sick. Isn’t that a terrible thing to say (err, write?) Of course, I’m not really grateful that she’s sick, but I’m grateful that we have an explanation for her (crazy!) behavior this week. And I’m so very grateful that she can clearly communicate most things to me.
Oh, little birdie, I am so grateful for you. Get better soon.
Kirtsy!

Have you seen the new Kirtsy? I love to click on over there for inspiration; it’s a great place to get lost for a little while. This week I even got to curate a slideshow on nests! How fitting. Click on over to see it!
Nesting in the nursery: veg out
This weekend I had some toddler-free time to work on little birdie #2’s room. Although we probably won’t move the new babe into its own room until about the time our new orange tulips (!) begin to pop next spring, I’ve been anxious to get a few nesting projects done in there. I’ve moved the rocking chair and changing table in, along with the baby’s clothes and diapers. Just the basics. Knowing that these little things are taken care helps me sleep a little better at night.
I wanted to create a unique, fun space for our new little one, but I also didn’t want to completely reinvent the wheel since we’ll just be reusing most of the things from Wren’s original nest. Had some paint left in the basement and then I was inspired to create a vegetable garden theme in the baby’s room when my Mom decided she wanted to make the baby this a-door-bell wall hanging we spotted over at PurlBee. I can’t wait to see it in person; I know it will be just perfect. Don’t you think?
So to carry out this veggie theme, I wanted to add a couple more details without being too cutesy, too baby, or too gender-specific. So I’ve been painting a fun carrot and beets border! Here are a few little sneak peeks:
I also wanted to create a little memento of this year’s garden, which helped to nourish the new little birdie so I saved some seed packets and framed them all together. I love that they say “packed for 2011.” Nothing fancy, but a nice little, meaningful addition to the new space.
Maybe if I *find* some extra time I will make a carrot pillow, or something fun like that. What do you think, lovelies? Have any other ideas for this space?
Happy Fall! Click on.
This photo was taken at our wedding – it’s been seven years this weekend, yahoo!
Happy fall, lovelies! My favorite season is officially here. Welcome pumpkins & bittersweet, apple cider & cozy scarves, curried squash soup & jeans, wool socks & beautiful leaves. I’m fond of sharing with people that I think summer is really a bit boring with its predictable and hot palette of blue, green and brown. Fall is so dynamic in northern Michigan with its sweeping storms, ever-changing clouds and wild colors. Green turning to orange, yellow, red. And pops of aubergine! It’s odd to be so full of vigor and yet death and dying at the same time, no?
As Zane wrote the other day, we’re also now entering my birthing season (!) so welcome to you too, little birdie #2. We look so forward to meeting you. And soon! Today marks 35 weeks. Where has the time gone?
Do you have plans this weekend to nest, harvest, pick a bushel or two of apples, watch a football game or plant some hope-filled bulbs? If you have a few minutes while you’re cuddling up inside with a mug of hot cocoa, click around here.
- It’s officially here and not a second too soon. Northern Michigan’s premier yarn shop now has an online store. Gasp!
- So yeah, I have a new blog crush. I LOVE her home. In fact, I’m inspired to paint all our walls white now…
- Did you see the feature on our bike commute to Wren’s school? Happy little birdie, happy Mama.
- Not from northern Michigan, but want to have a taste of it? Check out Traverse Gourmet. Yum.
- It’s Pflaumenkuchen and roasted tomato soup season. A couple good ones from ye ole archives.
Enjoy your first fall weekend! XO
last day of summer
last week of summer {Wordless Wednesday}
i love you more than squirrels
Are you kidding me?! I’m not sure how I’m surviving without this print in my house.
sleep?
“They” say not being able to sleep well in the late stages of pregnancy is just a way of preparing you for the new baby. 34 weeks and not able to sleep much here, lovelies. Hmmpphh. Sigh. Arrgghh. I just wish I were able to wrangle tomatoes or paint the house or protest stupid politics (don’t get me started) on the street corner in the middle of the night, but no, it’s too dark.
But the Internet is always on! And I have a mountain of work in front of me! And a hot cup of coffee! So here I am. How was your weekend, lovelies? Happy Monday!

Happy Weekend, lovelies! This beach photo from less than a week ago (!) really seems crazy to me as we’ve had frost/freeze warnings the last couple nights here in northern Michigan and we’ve rediscovered our fleece jackets and sock drawers again. Summery summer is over. How do you feel about that? I love wearing a scarf, so I’m in heaven…
I realized that it’s been a long time since I did a Friday “click on,” so here goes… Some fun places for you to get lost in ye ole Cyberspace this weekend. Enjoy!
- I can’t get this idea for all-natural moss graffiti out of my head.
- I have a crush on this blog. And her illustrations too.
- Have you perused the new Kirtsy yet? Get ready, get set, get inspired.
- Spread the love for our dear mitten with this Michigan letterpress print. Or this simple Michigan peninsulas embroidery. CUTE.
- Need a baby shower gift for a sushi lover? Yup. I know, right?!
- I could just move right in. Love this home.
